Mindfulness Special Project

During the 2017/18 school year, Wellness/Mindfulness Coach and local yoga instructor, Amani Carroccio developed a 16-week “Moving into Mindfulness” course that was introduced as part of her master’s degree/internship placement at Taos High School. The course introduced the concept of somatic intelligence as a resource to increase a student’s ability to self-regulate, improve attention and gain awareness. The project coincided with a New Mexico Public Education Department grant that established a full-time Truancy Coach at Taos High School as an intervention system to address chronic absenteeism. For reference, in the 2016/17 school year, over 1,000 truancy letters were sent home to parents.

The Mindfulness Project was very well received by students, faculty and the school administration. Students were exposed to new techniques to deal with stress, faculty were introduced to brain trauma and there was a concerted effort within the school culture to provide extra academic support for teens who had been identified as having considerable challenges at home.
A drop-in lunch time yoga class was introduced, an alternative to in-school detention was established and students asked for an after-school yoga class. Mindfulness practices and techniques were implemented on a school-wide basis when the school community was faced with both student suicides during the school year.

Target population: students at Taos High School and Cyber Magnet High Schools, specifically all freshmen in the health education and fitness classes as well as truant and special education teens.
