Out of School Time

Taos Community Foundation established Afterschool Connections, a sponsored project dedicated to the vision that all students have access to high quality afterschool and summer programs.  The project advisors are working on two current initiatives as this time, where community input is sought.

1) 2012 Youth Summer Guide – will be published as a pull-out insert in the Taos News in mid May.   Community programs/projects that would like to be included in this free summer program guide, need to fill out the Summer Program Information Form.

2) Youth Summer Program Provider Questionnaire – as part of assessing community need for out-of-school time, the provider questionnaire is designed to collect information to learn more about the overall landscape of programming in our community.  This survey in not in any way attempting to qualify, rate or evaluate programs – only to determine areas of need for additional community discussion.

If your program would like to be included in the 2012 Summer Youth Guide (at no cost), both the Information Form and the Program Provider Questionnaire must be completed.   If these are submitted to the Foundation by April 13, 2012, your program will be entered into a drawing for a $250 grant to your organization or program.

Afterschool Connections

Schools and neighborhoods are a community focal point where children, families, neighborhood residents and community organizations, connect in meaningful ways to support learning and benefit from cultural and enrichment opportunities, along with physical activities and support services.

Yet we have found local youth development programming can be uncoordinated, duplicative, and competitive. There have been instances of new programs initiating services already provided by established organizations; this duplication of services results in unorganized or un-strategic resource distribution by dislocated stakeholders.  On the same front, funders and local government entities are not always aware of sector best practices, and leveraged funding opportunities.  Studies have also shown that after school programs and activities are important tools for strengthening students’ self-esteem, learning new abilities, and encouraging lifelong learning.

Taos Out of School Time Network emerged from the convening of a series of meetings that addressed this challenge.
From these meetings we discovered:
• Community based programs were available to deliver out of school time programs but lacked school connection
• Schools wanted programming and could not consistently resource it
• Need for flexible and coordinated afterschool services
• Need for over all “quality control” and evaluation
• Some organizations delivered solid programming and some did not
• Some school had after school activities  but not consistent
• Parents did not know the services available to them
• We did not have through knowledge of how many children needed services
• Not all out of school time services should be delivered at school sites
• And much more
